1. I wish for everyone in the world to be happy
2. I wish to fall in love
3. I wish for an unlimited supply of free milk chocolate !
If you did have a genie who gave you 3 wishes, would it not be morally wrong to wish for things like “everyone on earth be happy” without first understanding everything there is to understand about that. Because if you don’t, then you could cause more harm than good.
Problems with each (just one example, there are others) :
1. Are you sure it is in everyone’s interest to be happy?
Maybe in the “big scheme of things”, a lot of important things would not happen if everyone was happy? For example, a lot of artistic works stem from solitude or some other kind of unhappiness.
2. Are you sure that’s the best thing that could happen to you and the effects of that on people or the world around you? Or even that you would not regret that? Imagine your wish came true, I can think of hundreds of ways in which this could cause you (and people around you) more harm than anything else.
Socrates said : “I encourage you to marry, If you marry a good wife you will become happy if you marry a bad one you will become a philosopher.”
3. You would probably get sick and fat if you had an endless supply of milk chocolate 😉
Assuming I’m right) what could you wish for that would not have even “potential” or “possible” unforeseen and negative consequences?
